Buying Guide: How to Purchase a Baby Pool Float
When you’re thinking about purchasing a baby pool float, there are numerous factors you should consider. You need to look for ones that optimize your baby’s safety first, and then everything else comes second. Below, you can find a list of the essential features to look for in a baby float:
Generally, doctors believe that kids, especially babies under six months, should not be exposed to too much sunlight. Ultraviolet radiation can cause more harm than good during their early development. This is mainly because their skin is yet delicate and not fully developed.
For that reason, you need to find baby floats equipped with canopies. A canopy acts as a shade against the sunlight found on top of a baby float. Sometimes you will find a fantastic baby float that does not come with a canopy. A cap or hat will also protect your baby in cases like this.
The main reason you want to protect your baby from the sun is not only related to their age. You want to shield yourself from the sun too, so imagine leaving your kid under the sun for hours on end. Hence, a canopy is vital, especially for very young babies.
As a concerned parent, you have been skeptical about pool floats at some point in life. Well, is a pool float safe for a baby? Will they tip over? For that reason, precisely, you should always look for baby pool floats with many innovative safety measurements taken.
Different floats portray their security measures according to other features. For instance, a harness or belt around the baby’s belt is always a good sign that the float is very secure and safe, as that will ensure your baby stays in place.
Also, some floats offer extra cushioning or more floats attached on the sides that will prevent your baby from tipping over if they approach the edges. Also, the deeper the seating area and the wider the base, the more secure the baby float is as it provides more room and overall stability for your baby.
The main issue with the size is that floats are usually designed to fit a specific age range. It usually is tailored towards either toddlers, infants, or babies, and rarely all three age ranges together. Hence, if you want something durable and grow with your baby, find it adjustable and flexible to fit various ages.
One way to find a float like this is to hunt for one that has adjustability in its seating. For instance, some have adjustable belts that you can loosen or tighten. But again, you do not want leg openings that are too wide, risking your baby falling through or feeling uncomfortable as a baby.
Moreover, finding a pool float with a broader base is almost always a better purchase. It will make your baby feel more stable and comfortable. As a general rule of thumb, the wider the bottom of the float, the more secure and stable your baby will be.
Okay, okay. We all love those flamingo-shaped floats or those whale ones, but are they functional? Very fashionable and attractive baby floats tend to have less functionality and often lack a canopy to protect your baby from sunlight.
Hence, if you want something more colorful and fashionable than the usual, boring baby floats, ensure that you are not prioritizing the design over your baby’s health and safety.
On the other hand, you can find baby floats that suit your baby. You can find a float that provides you with the peace of mind you need while your baby has a lovely float that keeps him distracted.
If you are looking for a temporary solution for a one-day trip to a pool, then the material will not be one of your main concerns. However, if you are looking for a durable float that will last for a long time, then the type of material used should be high up on your list of features to check off.
Look for a durable material that is also easily cleaned. Avoid any pool floats made of flimsy, thin material as there is a high chance it would rupture. Never opt for cheaper material because the floats cost less, as they are almost guaranteed to get ruined quickly.
PVC material is the most common type of material used for pool floats, and it has been proven to be a great one at it.
Once you have covered all other materials that ensure your comfort, now you should consider your baby’s comfort. The last thing you want is your baby crying in the pool because they feel some pain. Hence, you really should think about the best floats that guarantee the comfort of your kid.
The ideal float would have tough seams that are flat, but they should also be non-irritant and avoid causing any allergic reactions. Moreover, the seat itself would be the most important thing, as this is what your baby will spend the most time on.
Hence, find a pool float with broad, but not too wide, leg openings. Moreover, you do not want to go for a small pool float that will make your baby feel like he’s suffocating.
Some numerous other options and accessories that accompany pool floats. These include canopies to protect from sunlight and water toys for your baby to enjoy while swimming around.
Moreover, some products come with mesh bags or waterproof bags to carry around the deflated float. This comes in handy, especially if you plan on taking the pool float around when traveling or going on a vacation.
Choosing the Right Baby Pool Float
All in all, you want to provide the most comfortable and optimal situation for your baby. You do not want to buy a cheap product that will scar your baby or buy something too expensive that you will rarely use. Hence, put your convenience and your baby’s needs first.
All in all, the ultimate way to go about picking the best baby pool float is to evaluate your top priorities and what concerns you the most. Are you most worried about the cost, or are you more interested in your baby’s safety?
Also, do not fall for the scam of those fantastic designs. If you do end up googling these colorful floats, then make sure they have the specifications discussed above to make sure your baby stays stable and safe in the float.
If you doubt whether you should even invest in a good float, remember that newborns are more capable of floating on the water than older kids are. They have it naturally in them, and we advise you to strengthen that instinct before they slowly lose it.
Altogether, we have always favored the SwimWay Float. It provides every feature we believe is necessary for a baby pool float. It has a shielding canopy, a broad base, a high-quality material and will provide your baby with the utmost comfort.
However, all the baby floats mentioned above are recommended depending on your specific requirements. These baby floats are affordable and have unique features, colors, styles, and specifications.
Frequently Asked Questions
How to Organize Pool Floats
Do you have a bunch of pool floats that you need to organize and store away? Or do you just have one you do not know what to do with? Well, these days, we see pool floats everywhere, and honestly, they are a lot of fun. They remind us of warmth and summer, and good memories.
So, how do you organize them effectively? Below is a list of how to properly take care of all your pool floats and store them away effectively without risking any additional wear and tear due to any carelessness.
1) Always wash and dry your float before you put them away
You always need to make sure you clean off your floats to avoid any stains, dirt, or dampness from affecting them. To do so, dry it off with a dry cloth, rinse it with water, wipe it off with some soap and water, rinse it, then put the float outside in the sunlight for a few hours.
2) Deflate the air out and fold the float
If you keep the float inflated, it will take up a lot of unnecessary storage space. So, use a pump that can deflate the float to eliminate all the air. This way is more manageable than letting it out manually yourself.
3) Store in airtight containers
You should store the deflated float in an airtight container to prevent any drastic changes in temperature or humidity from affecting the material. You can also use vacuum-sealed bags if you do not have the space for something bigger.
4) Avoid prolonged exposure to high temperatures
Leaving your floats in the sunlight for hours on end will ruin the condition of the float. Hence, make sure you do not keep it out for long. Otherwise, the air inside would expand, and the float will probably pop.
5) Do not expose them to other stimuli
We mean by this is do not store them in a place where it is too hot or too cold. Also, make sure it stays away from any dampness as that might lead to the material breaking down or getting ruined.
Best Pool Float for 1.5-Years-old
When you are looking for the best pool float for a child who is 1.5-years-old, you need to mainly make sure that the float can handle the weight of your kind. Moreover, you need to ensure that the float is wide enough to provide your kid with comfort. Hence, our top 3 picks are:

How to Fold Up Baby Pool Float
Below is a step-by-step rundown of how to take care of your pool float and fold it up:
- Deflate the float by using a pump or manually. Make sure all the air is out before proceeding to the next steps.
- Open up the float. Hold the float at an angle where your left hand is placed at 2 o’clock, while your left hand should be at 10 o’clock. Make sure your palms are facing out.
- Now bring both your hands right in front of you, making them overlap. This will make the float automatically close on itself and form a sphere-like, compact ball.
The floats are built in a way that makes them automatically fold on themselves once you bring both edges closer together. Hence, do not force it; instead, slowly and surely get both palms towards each other and make them overlap.
When Can a Baby Float in the Pool
You might be surprised to hear this, but babies under the age of 6 months float much better than adults or older kids do. While that does not mean they can swim, it means they can float because of their body’s composition.
When babies are born, they have an affinity to a warm and watery environment because of the nature of the amniotic fluid surrounding them in their mother’s womb. That is why babies under six months can float without much trouble.
Hence, it is recommended you start training your baby from a very young age before six months. While it will not be proper athletic training, getting used to the water and feeling confident in it will help avoid any complications later on as they grow up.
Baby Pool Float for 6-month-old
Since 6-months-old babies do not yet have the coordination and muscle memory of older kids, you have to make sure you pick a pool float that is small, stable and allows them to feel comfortable. How We Pick the Best Baby Pool Float
Baby pool floats are marvelous, honestly, and we love them for the convenience they provide. Not only does it make your life easier in the summer, but it helps include your little one in all the activities around the pool. However, not all baby pool floats are created equal. Of course, we do get them through rigorous testing cycles, but there are specific criteria we look for in every pool float.
Our ultimate features include:
- Sun protection
- Safety measures
- Easily inflated and deflated
While many parents neglect to check on this feature, it is one of the most critical aspects of almost any baby product. That’s because we really never run out of baby stuff around the house, and the easier it is to store it, the better. Hence, we love our baby pool floats, but we prioritize foldability.
Hence, we look into floats that can be folded away without any trouble. The smaller it can get, the better. That’s because it makes your life that much easier, as you can store it away in your handbag, baby bag, or even throw it in your car somewhere.
UV light is everyone’s worst enemy, but it can be especially harmful to a baby. Not only that but do you really want to have a case of baby sunburn on your hand? It’ll be incredibly uncomfortable for both you and your little one, so a canopy is always the way to go.
We ensure that the ones with sun protection have canopies large enough to protect the child and aren’t there for decoration purposes only.
We do not mean to cause fright of any sort, but even with the best pool floats, you run the risk of your baby drowning if the float capsizes. Hence, we always look for additional security measures that give the float some extra points.
Some of the features include high-quality material, a sturdy circumference that’s high enough, inner springs, some straps to keep the baby in place, and safety valves. All these features prevent leakage, allow stability, keep your baby safe, and prevent easy tears of the float.
Easy to Deflate & Inflate
We personally hate spending anything more than 5 minutes inflating or deflating our baby floats. Not only does it take all the breath out of you, but it also is excruciating. It feels like you’re wasting away both your time and your energy.
Hence, we look for baby pool floats that are simple. A few minutes to inflate and a few minutes to deflate. That’s why we don’t really look for the fancy floats with all the colors and the designs, as these are often harder to blow up.
Why Trust Us
Trust only comes once you get to know the people, which is why we believe it’s vital to introduce ourselves. Our team consists of Eliza Williams, a mother of three beautiful children, and Mathew Field, a research enthusiast.
If you go through our review articles, you’ll soon realize that they have some personal touches. That’s because our team is built on trust, total honesty, and some personal experience.
You probably wonder how we choose our products and what the process looks like. The motivation behind all this comes from wanting to extend a helping hand to other parents and spread awareness about the best products.
Hence, our process is quite lengthy. We first compile a list of baby pool floats. These include top-listed forums, online reviews, ones Eliza has previously owned, and recommendations from parents around us. Then, we check for the basic desired features. After that, the ones that make it through go through 2 months of testing to see how well they withstand our testing process.
How We Test Our Baby Pool Floats
Our baby pool floats take approximately 2 months to complete their testing process. Through that, we aim to establish a few keynotes about them. However, once one of the floats fails one of the actual tests, we automatically eliminate it, and it’s no longer on the list. That’s because it makes our screening process more manageable, and we honestly want to list only the top products out there.
Hence, throughout our testing, we answer the following questions:
- How safe is the float? Will it withstand some playful splashes and pushing around?
- If there are any safety buckles, will they withhold against baby movements?
- Will some blunt forces cause the float to rip?
- How easy is it to capsize? Will some water in the pool lead to instant trouble?
- How vast is the sun canopy, and will it protect the baby despite the sun’s location in the sky?
- How long does it take to blow the float up?
- Impact test: we place the inflated float into a pool and push it around approximately 100 times. We see whether that causes some air to escape or withstand the forces against it.
- Tear test: the inflated pool is hit against blunt objects to see if it’ll tear easily. Some random baby toys, other baby floats, a swimming suit (if someone hits the float), and some shoes.
- Safety buckles: we tug on the clips approximately 50 times with a relatively strong force, which aims to test the strength against a baby’s movement.
- Capsizing: after placing the inflated float in a body of water, we put a doll in there (around 12 pounds) and moved it all around. We create a lot of simulations of what a regular pool would feel like with all the splashing and kids playing around.
- Canopy size: while this is not absolutely vital, we prefer large canopies to cover the kid from all angles. However, as most umbrellas cannot even do that, we also test how well the top protects from the sunlight.
- Inflation time: we time ourselves while inflating the pool and take the average time after 20 times. That gives us an approximate time to how long a typical person would take the blow the float up.
